Henry VIII

Henry VIIILet’s throw WAY back this Thursday!  One of my favorite historical eras is the Tudor era.  You don’t find people much more interesting than Henry VIII.  Charismatic and flawed, Henry ruled England from 1509 to 1547.

Most people know Henry was married six times and had an unfortunate quirk for killing some of his wives.  And you may also be aware that he created the Church of England and put himself at the head of it after fighting with the Pope.  But here are some other fun facts about Henry VIII:

  • Henry was never meant to be king.  He was the second son of Henry VII and likely would have gone to the church if his older brother Arthur had not passed away when Henry was 10 years old.  Of Henry’s six siblings, only he and his two sisters (Margaret and Mary) lived to adulthood.
  • Henry’s first marriage was with his brother Arthur’s widow, Katherine of Aragon.  Katherine and Arthur were married for 5 months before Arthur’s death – and according to Katherine and her ladies, the marriage was never consummated.  Katherine’s mother Isabella of Castille and Henry VII were still very interested in uniting their two countries in marriage and signed a treaty betrothing Henry and Katherine about a year after Arthur’s death – when Henry was only 11 years old!  The road to the marriage was rocky and Henry didn’t actually agree to it until after his father’s death.   Henry and Katherine were eventually married in 1509 shortly after Henry’s coronation at age 17.
  • Henry didn’t just behead wives.  He started his reign by executing two of his father’s ministers and Wikipedia lists 92 people he ordered executed!

Old Medications?

medication

Welcome back to Wellness Wednesday!  The calendar says it’s spring now – even if the weather forecast hasn’t gotten the word yet – so you may have started your spring cleaning.  Your medicine cabinet is a good place to start with spring cleaning to make sure you’re stocked with first aid items and that you’re getting rid of outdated medications or medications you’re not taking.

The effectiveness of medications certainly declines over time.  If you take an expired aspirin or cold pill, it might not hurt you although it may not be as effective as it once was.  But if you have outdated/unused prescription medications you should probably dispose of them.

The FDA recommends that you dispose of old medications following these steps:

  1. Mix medicines (do not crush tablets or capsules) with an unpalatable substance such as dirt, kitty litter, or used coffee grounds.
  2. Place the mixture in a container such as a sealed plastic bag.
  3. Throw the container in your household trash.
  4. Scratch out all personal information on the prescription label of your empty pill bottle or empty medicine packaging to make it unreadable, then dispose of the container.

To-Do Tuesday

To-Do-List.jpgI’m a list maker.  A firm believer in keeping a to do list so I can organize my activities and not let anything slip through the cracks.  Tuesdays will be all about my to-do’s.

Some of my lists get written down – like the grocery list, chores, work projects but I carry a lot of them in my head.  I especially like the mental list I keep of places I’d like to go.

I have a big list of places I’d like to return to: London, Paris, Disney World, New Orleans (and always NYC) to name my favorite places.  But I have a list of places I still want to see too.

Top places I want to visit:

  • The Grand Canyon.  I REALLY want to go to the Grand Canyon and take the tour where you ride a mule.  Check it out here:  National Parks – Grand Canyon Mule Rides
  • Montreal.  I’ve been told that if you love Paris, you’ll love Montreal – and it doesn’t take a long plane ride to get there!  Take a virtual tour of Montreal HERE.
  • California Wine Country.  I would love to drive the coast and wander around in wine country.  Not only is it beautiful out there but how much fun would it be to explore B&Bs and taste wine?  I like this site when I’m dreaming about wine country.

Firsts

IMG_0021

Think about it.   When you’re little, major firsts come all the time.  First smile, first word, first step, first bike, first day of school, first date…  But once you get past a certain age, you need to work a little harder to find things to experience for the first time!  So with Monday being the first day of the work week, I’ll be using Mondays to talk about firsts.

Doing something for the first time can be a real adventure like hiking the Grand Canyon.  Or maybe it’s just trying a new recipe for the first time.  You never know.

My favorite recent first was knitting my first sock.  It was ENORMOUS but I knew it was going to be weird because I didn’t have the right size needles or yarn – but I still made my first sock without any help (except YouTube!).  Great feeling isn’t it?

What was your favorite first?  Let me know in the comments!

History

I get a lot of Throwback Thursday posts on Facebook so I thought on Thursdays we would explore history.

I like history – probably because my Dad centered so many of our family vacations around historical places when I was growing up.  We visited US historical sites like Gettysburg and Williamsburg, but we also went to off the beaten path places like the Will Rogers Museum in Claremore, OK.   I love visiting museums and looking back to see how we got to where we are now.  So when I saw the PSA about Women’t History Month on the local news this morning, it got me wondering.

Women’s History month originated in 1981 when Congress passed an act prompting Women’s History week.  Since 1995, our Presidents have issued annual proclamations declaring March Women’s History Month.   Right now,  the Library of Congress, the National Archives, the National Gallery, the National Park Service, the Smithsonian Museum and more are featuring exhibits and celebrating the role of Women in American History.

Do you want to know more about Women’s History month before it’s gone for 2018?  Check out womenshistorymonth.gov .  Today they’re hosting a livestream on Facebook and YouTube about women who are illustrators and cartoonists!  Check out the schedule for the rest of the month – I’m sure you’ll find something of interest to you!

Welcome to Wellness Wednesday!

Wednesdays will be Wellness day here on my blog.  When you Google “Wellness,” the image above is what you get.  Good health has been easy for me so far in my life (knock on wood!).  I eat a fairly balanced diet, exercise regularly and get an adequate amount of sleep.

But there are many other dimensions to wellness – and today I’m curious about meditation.  I have downloaded the Simple Habit Meditation app and I’m giving it a try.   According to the app, if you meditate for just 5 minutes/day you can reduce stress, improve focus, sleep better, relax faster, breathe easier and more.  And it’s recommended by both Apple and Business Insider so how can I go wrong?

I did my first 5 minute session a few minutes ago.  I thought maybe it would be all “new age” but it was actually just a guided focus on my breathing that was really enjoyable and very relaxing.  I did a video job interview this morning that I found very stressful and this simple 5 minute exercise took the tension right out of my shoulders.  I wasn’t sure this would be for me – but I think I’m going to set the reminder for the app and try it again tomorrow!

The adventure begins…

3z+%dtBCQqitkHmShBW9mAI never thought I would start a blog.  But here I am.  I like to learn something new every day – it keeps me active and thinking.  So now I’ll share with you!

This blog is my new thing today but as I get going, I’m planning to have theme days so you’ll know what to expect – and can tune in for things you find more interesting.

This blog is my stake in the sand to show the world that a person in their 50s can be as digitally savvy as someone half her age.  Just wait and see!
